SOUNDBLASTER LIVE DIGITAL I/O CABLE
Well since my Tbeach Monterey was causing IRQ conflicts, I decided to get a new LOW COST, but I must add, POWERFUL new sound card. (Impressive features listed at the bottom.)
I bought the CREATIVE SOUNDBLASTER LIVE value (OEM) version. This version only cost about 55% of the boxed version with instructions, and was a little bit trickier to install.
The first thing the dealer asked me was "WHAT OPERATING SYSTEM WILL YOU BE USING?" The software runs differently on WIN ME THAN ON WINDOWS 98. Of course I said WIN ME, but since I only had the UPGRADE of WIN ME this caused a bit of a twist to the install. The simple things worked ok, but the special DSP effects wouldn't load and WinME wouldn't ALLOW me to install them. IT WASN'T UNTIL I WENT TO CREATIVE.COM WEBSITE that I found the software that I needed. (Of course the old REMNANT of TBEACH drivers left over in my system didn't help either) IT SEEMS THAT MY WIN ME IS ACTUALLY PARTLY WIN 98 BECAUSE I WAS ASKED FOR CAB.5 FILE FROM THE WIN ME DISK WHICH WAS IN A WIN98 SUBDIRECTORY ON THE WIN ME DISK!
I might also add that the BOXED VERSION also comes with additional SOUND FORGE and MP3 software, AND INSTRUCTION MANUAL. ********************************************
Features of the SBLIVE value
64 voice polyphony (plays up to 64 different sounds at the same time)
8 point interpolation (smooths out the steps)
It can use up to 32megs of my system RAM for samples
48 MIDI CHANNELS
records up to 16 bit 48khz (I can also use Cool Edit for 32 bit DSP (DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING)
HERE'S THE IMPORTANT ONE SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO IS BETTER THAN 96 DB which is as good as the best CD you can buy!
GENERAL MIDI AND ALSO HAS DRIVERS FOR WIN NT!
It also has EAX (EFFECTS CONTROL PANEL) MPU-401 MIDI SUPPORT
Microsoft Direct Sound is also supported.
DID I FORGET TO MENTION DIGITAL OUT (S/PDIF) ?
I have rigged up a digital I/O cable to use with my DAT (specs for cable at end of article) and I works! Not only does the DAT record the DRY SOUNDS, but it will also record the EFFECTS from the EAX control panel as well. The only mysterious thing is that my DAT will show 48 KHZ whether I play a 44.1 or 48 khz .WAV FILE? (I'M SUPPOSING THAT the SBLIVE converts all digital output to 48 khz)Therefore I'm recording in 48khz when I want to "PLAY" with the sound. Cable specs.
75 OHM COAX WIRE WITH RCA MALE PLUG ON ONE END and a MINI PHONE PLUG FOR THE OTHER END.
Your OTHER DIGITAL device must have a DIGITAL COAX I/O (RCA FEMALE JACK)
With the 75 ohm cable, it was impossible to SOLDER the ground and so I wrapped several turns of copper wire around the coax and casings/ ground lugs and then applied solder to them. The CENTER WIRE is copper and easy to solder. (If you have soldered before) CREATIVE ALSO HAS AN OPTIONAL ADD-ON BOARD WHICH WILL GIVE YOU BOTH DIGITAL INPUT AND OUTPUT.
What did I pay?.....Pennies for the cable and only 90$ CAN. (approx $60 U.S.) for the OEM SBLIVE VALUE
GREAT VALUE AND GREAT SOUND CARD FOR THE MONEY!
