MIDI SEQUENCERS 101

EVEN THOUGH NEW SOFTWARE HAS EMERGED THAT INCORPORATES BOTH HARD DISK RECORDING AND MIDI SEQUENCING, THIS EARLY ARTICLE OF MINE MAY STILL BE OF HELP TO THOSE STARTING OUT.

QUESTION : I don't know anything about recording with MIDI. What do I do?

I can understand how overwhelmed you are. If I just got started now , I would also be overwhelmed with midi. It was a bit easier for me because when I started with synthesis 23 years ago I had very few options, and as the options increased I learned a new option 1 at a time.

Sometimes I even advised designers and was instrumental in bringing about new features. But they came ONE STEP AT A TIME.

There are many new MIDI SEQUENCERS sequencers on the market today. Some are designed for the novice and some have huge instruction manuals up to 600 pages in length. It is my hope that this old article of mine will teach you a few basics to begin with.

As I go through the history below I will be dropping MIDI jargon along the way. This will help familiarize you with the concepts. You may already be beyond some of this but I'm posting this also as an aid for the beginners that may be visiting. I'll be dropping GENERAL TERMS and jargon which should apply to most sequencers in use today.
